Assessment of the dietary supplement use by professional female football players

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2019, Vol 35, Issue 1

Abstract

Background. A properly composed diet is one of the key elements favorably affecting exercise capacity in athletes. Athletes increasingly often complement their diet by including dietary supplements in it. Due to the risk entailed by improper supplementation, it is justifiable to monitor supplement consumption. The aim of the study was to assess the consumption of dietary supplements by female football players at a competitive level of athletic performance. Material and methods. The study was conducted in a sample of 44 female football players, training at three league levels: ExtraLeague, I-League and II-League. The questionnaire included the questions about the period of training, diets, self-assessment of the participants’ knowledge on nutrition and supplementation. Additionally, measurements of body height and body mass were taken. Results. The sample included women aged 20.5±5 years; the subjects body height and body mass were 167.2±5 cm and 61.6±10.1 kg respectively and they trained on average 5 years or longer. 20.5% of the survey respondents reported taking dietary supplements, most of them (67%) within the period shorter than six months. The most frequent reported reasons for supplementation were: the desire to improve exercise capacity and/or someone’s recommendation. Most of the respondents (65%) reported a favorable effect of dietary supplementation. The football players learned about supplementation from their dieticians and/or the mass media. Conclusions: The female football players usually used supplements consciously and took only those with the effect confirmed by study results. Dietary supplements were usually taken with caution and the sources of knowledge of the supplements were in most cases reliable.
