Journal Title: Medycyna Ogólna i Nauki o Zdrowiu - Year 2014, Vol 20, Issue 4

Abstract

introduction and aim. Intestinal stoma is the cause of medical and social problems and causes difficulties in meeting life needs. Appropriate education and rehabilitation of patients improves their quality of life in many aspects. The aim of the study was to determine the types of medical and social problems of people with a stoma associated in POL- ILKO. materials and methods. The study involved 400 people with a stoma, belonging to 17 selected departments of POL- ILKO from all over the country. All subjects gave written consent to participate in the study. The study used research tools developed independently and a standard test AIS scale. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS PL, v.12 statistical package. The collected data were analysed according to gender, age, education and place of residence. Qualitative variables and differences between groups were evaluated using the chi-square test of independence. Values for p < 0.05 were considered statistically significant. results. It was shown that subjects experience a variety of medical and social problems associated with having a stoma, taking care of it and their daily functioning. conclusions. The results led to the following conclusions: stoma was not the reason for changes in relationships with family and friends. The respondents experienced problems: connected with the fact of having a stoma (fear of dirt, embarrassment because of odours, excessive amount of gas, reduced social life); connected with daily care of stoma (sticking and unsticking the stoma plate, washing the skin around the stoma, cutting a hole in the plate). Having a stoma influenced the daily functioning and caused material difficulties, a negative attitude of the community, and unemployment.
