Restructuring of the Economic Development in North Rhine-Westphalia: From the German Center of Mining and Metal Industry Towards German “Silicon Valley”

Abstract
The article explores evolution of the economic development of North Rhine-Westphalia, the largest German region, which suffered a major economic recession in the period of 1960s and 1970s. It demonstrates how public authorities at different levels of this German State policies and tools applied to implement a large-scale transition at the economic, social, professional qualification and human potential in North Rhine-Westphalia. Furthermore the article analyzes effects achieved during the transition within the last decades as well as upcoming development trends.
