A CHIEFTAIN`S BURIAL OF THE HUN TIME IN CONCEŞTI, AND ITS CULTURAL AND HISTORICAL CONTEXT

Abstract

The "Prince" grave of the Great Migration time in Conceşti, Romania is well-known to scientists. It is necessary to consider the cultural and historical context of this find. It can be assumed that one of the barbarian chieftains of the initial phase of Hun era (the period of D1; last third of 4 – 1 half of 5 cent. AD) was buried in Conceşti, perhaps he was the ruler of Gothic "king-dom" in the North Moldova, or Hun "governor" in the region. There remain some puzzling features of the funeral rites associated with the Greco-Roman tradition: subplate crypt, funeral wreath. It is tempting to relate this burial with the barbarians, who had moved here from the area of Cimmerian Bos-porus, because the Goths are well-known in the Bosporus approx. 400 AD.
