Journal Title: Journal of Drug Discovery and Therapeutics - Year 2013, Vol 1, Issue 3
Abstract
Pharmacy is the art and science of preparing and dispensing medications and related information to the public health. The aim of the study was to evaluate the good quality of dispensing practice of the community pharmacist (CP) according to rational use of drugs (RUD) principles and characterize the community Pharmacy in Bangladesh. The interventional study in which 210 community pharmacies dispenser in the Dhanmondi, Green road, Muhammadpur area and Panthopath zone of Dhaka city were evaluated by face to face interviews and an unannounced simulated case scenario in 2012. The average dispensing time, dispensing practice, and adequate labeling were evaluated as rationality indicators. Our results showed that 3.3% of the diploma pharmacists were present in their pharmacies during the simulation studies. Only 40.5% of the prescriptions were dispensed by the “C”-grade pharmacist. 10.95% of the pharmacy employees had no more than a primary school degree. Half of the patients take drugs from a pharmacy without prescription. The average dispensing time for a single drug was 137±29seconds. Actually, good pharmacy practice was devoid of in CP in the Dhaka city. Since most patients consulted a pharmacist for their medication (with or without a prescription), it seemed that pharmacy education would be essential for pharmacists and pharmacy employees in promoting RUD.
