A comparison of substance abusers and normal individuals in terms of cognitive distortions, dysfunctional attitudes and coping with stressful situations

Abstract
This study was conducted with the aim of comparing substance abusers and normal individuals in terms of cognitive distortions, dysfunctional attitudes and coping with stressful situations. In terms of the aim, the research method is applied; in terms of control and manipulation of variables, the research method is non-experimental and in terms of nature, the research method is descriptive and of comparative type. The population of the study was consisted of men who visited public and private drug addiction treatment centers in Tehran and were diagnosed with substance use disorder by the related specialist. The sampling method was voluntary convenience sampling. Considering the research design (causal-comparative), a group of 100 individuals with drug abuse disorder and another group of 100 individuals without any substance use that were matched based on control variables of age and gender were selected. Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations (CISS), 26-item Dysfunctional Attitude Scale (DAS-26) and Interpersonal Cognitive Distortions Scale were used for data collection. Multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) was used for exploring the data. The results of the study indicated that there is a significant difference between substance abusers and normal individuals in terms of cognitive distortions and dysfunctional attitudes. Also, the results of the study indicated that there is a significant difference between the substance abusers and normal individuals in terms of task-oriented coping strategy (P<0.001), emotion-oriented coping strategy (P<0.001) and avoidance coping strategy (P<0.003).
