A comparison of the psychological profiles of the students with excellent and mediocre academic achievement

Abstract

The objective of the study was to identify psychological distinctions between students with different academic performance. We conducted a study to determine the differences in psychological profiles of students with high and mediocre achievement. The study involved 40 students (20 boys and 20 girls) aged 17 to 19 years with different grades. The result of the study made the following conclusions. The honor students are characterized with high level of anxiety. As a result of the Jung’s personality test and the exploration of the achievement sheets of students was revealed that examination rating was authentically higher in introverts. Among the mediocre successful students was dominated extraversion, due to their increased distraction and restlessness. According to the prevalent accentuation and types of personality honors are characterized by the ambition, selfishness, high aspirations, commitment to high quality of work, procrastination, doubt in the correctness of the results of their work. In our opinion, the honors students are anxious and insecure personalities. Typical for students with mediocre achievement is that they demonstrate the reluctance to study, they don’t like monotonous activity, enforced loneliness. Failures in the study don’t cause anxiety or depression. This article gives additional information about the differences of the psychotypes of students with different academic performance, about specific of their content and dynamics in situations of educational activity. However, it is necessary to consider the possibility that the students with mediocre achievement, as honors students, can achieve great results, if they will be able to create for themselves propitious conditions.
