Abstract
The Gezi Park protests emerged as an environmental action in İstanbul, the largest city in Turkey, and in a short time become a social movement against the government. As a result of organization on social media, protests spread to most Turkish cities, mainly in June 2013. This article attempts to define how the national newspapers of Turkey presented the Gezi Park Protests on their front pages. The research was conducted on 19 national newspapers published between May 27 and June 16, 2013 using content analysis of 1811 news items about the Gezi Park protests. The study aims to answer the following questions: How important were the Gezi Park protests for the national newspapers? What kind of news and information about the Gezi Park protests appeared on the front pages of the national newspapers and in what proportions? The total daily circulation of national newspapers in Turkey is about 5.5 million, and the 19 newspapers studied have a circulation of 4,177,000; therefore, this research is significant in indicating how the national newspapers reflected the Gezi Park protests to a large audience.
