A Critical-Discourse and Semiotic Investigation into the Effect of Social Class on Multiplicative Linguistic Representations of the Symbols of Power in Persian Proverbs
Journal Title: International Research Journal of Applied and Basic Sciences - Year 2013, Vol 6, Issue 10
Abstract
The present article reports the effects of individuals’ social class on linguistic representations of symbols of power used in Persian proverbs. Based on the assumption of the effect of social class on linguistic representations, a sample consisting of 600 respondents was selected from a population of more than 254,000 people based on random sampling method. A validated researcher-made questionnaire was distributed among the participants requiring them to determine the degree to which any of the suggested words they would associate upon hearing words that indicated the power symbols. The results disclosed a significant difference in linguistic representations of power symbols among individuals belonging to different social classes. In addition, the results confirmed the assumption that the mental contents of individuals belonging to different social classes interacted differently with the same symbols, i.e., with different people behaving differently towards power symbols. However, people from the same social class had similar behavior.
