A Cross-Sectional Assessment of Vitamin D Levels Among Patients Attending Psychiatry Out-Patient Department

Abstract
Vitamin D, also known as sunshine vitamin, influences the bones, intestines, immune and cardiovascular systems, pancreas, muscles, brain, and the control of cell cycles. Vitamin D also plays a crucial role in brain development and neuroprotection. It also exerts multiple anti inflammatory effects and play a role in brain detoxification pathways. A cross-sectional study was done at Malla Reddy Hospital to assess the levels of vitamin D among 55 psychiatric outpatients and they were categorized as deficient, insufficient or sufficient based on the vitamin D levels. All patients attending Psychiatry OPD were diagnosed as per the ICD-10 and were screened for vitamin D levels using radio immunoassay after obtaining their consent and who were willing to undergo laboratory test. A structurally designed data collection form had been used to collect the data such as demographics, medical history, lab investigations, treatment and progress. Out of 55 patients, 33 (60%) were found to be deficient, while 14(25.5%) were considered insufficient. Vitamin D levels analyzed across various psychiatric patients showed that deficiency was more prevalent among OCD and somatoform disorder patients. It is therefore required to amend the screening procedures and make vitamin D testing as a part of routine screening to prevent deficiencies.
