A MATHEMATICAL MODEL OF THE HYPORHEIC ZONE FLUIDIZATION
Journal Title: Biuletyn Państwowego Instytutu Geologicznego - Year 2018, Vol 471, Issue 471
Abstract
In the hyporheic zone, exchange of surface water and groundwater takes place. During the groundwater drainage and the increase in hydraulic gradient, this zone can be fluidized. The paper presents a mathematical model of hyporheic zone fluidization. It has been obtained from a balance of forces related to the water filtration through the hyporheic zone. The mathematical model makes it possible to predict the occurrence of fluidization depending on the increase in water table position. A series of laboratory tests were carried out, which confirmed the predictions according to the model. The hydrological and hydrogeological influences of hyporheic zone fluidization were also analyzed, namely: the decline of diurnal water level fluctuations in headwaters and the variable rate of decline of water level after rainfall flood.

PRACTICAL ASPECTS OF USE OF SELECTED METHODS IN DETERMINING MODAL MINERAL COMPOSITIONS IN PERIDOTITE XENOLITHS
In scientific literature, there are several methods estimating modal mineral composition in peridotite xenoliths. The main techniques are focused on: 1) traditional microscopic analyses (point counting), 2) statistical...
EVALUATION OF THE ASSESSMENT AND THE RESERVES OF UNDEVELOPED UPPER SILESIAN ZINC-LEAD ORE DEPOSITS USING THE NEW ASSESSMENT PRINCIPLES
At the beginning of the XXIst century the domestic Zn–Pn ore mining industry has reached its final stage of existence. Recently, the only operating Zn–Pb ore mine in the Upper Silesia region is the Olkusz-Pomorzany enter...
Lower Pleistocene stratigraphy of northeastern Poland on the basis of studies of lake deposits from the Sucha Wieś (Ełk Lakeland) and Czarnucha (Augustów Plain) sections with reference to the areas of Russia, Lithuania and Belarus
In the Sucha Wieś and Czarnucha boreholes drilled in 1988–1989, interglacial lacustrine and fluvial organic organic and mineral deposits were encountered. Palynological and lithologic-petrographical analyses and palaeoma...
THE IMPORTANCE OF WATER INFILTRATION IN THE PROCESS OF NON-COHESIVE SOIL COMPACTION BASED ON INVESTIGATIONS IN GROUNDWATER INTAKES FOR THE CITY OF POZNAŃ AND EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES
The compaction process of loose soils mineral skeleton is influenced by many factors, e.g.: vibrations, overloading and water flow through soils. The aim of the present paper is to asses significance of the last factor....
Influence of the recognition scale on the assessment of groundwater vulnerability to contamination exemplified by studies in The Kampinos National Park
Maps of natural groundwater vulnerability to contamination illustrate the assessment of natural groundwater vulnerability. They are also one of the important components that are taken into consideration while making a de...
