A RESEARCH STUDY ON ANTIUROLITHIATIC ACTIVITY OF ACACIA SINUATA PODS ON ETHYLENE GLYCOL INDUCED RENAL CALCULI RATS
Journal Title: Mintage journal of pharmaceutical and medical sciences - Year 2018, Vol 7, Issue 2
Abstract
The pods of Acacia sinuata are well-known for its antiurolithiatic, diuretic, hepatoprotective, antinociceptive, anti microbial, hair conditioning, purgative agent and anti oxidant activity. Objective: The objective of the present study is to evaluate anti urolithiatic activity of aqueous extract of Acacia sinuata pods against ethylene glycol induced urolithiasis in order to support the folk lore claim. Methodology: Healthy adult male albino rats of wistar strain weighing 150-120 g were selected for the study. The animals were acclimatized to standard laboratory conditions with temperature 25±2ºC and fed with standard animal pellet feed (Hindustan lever limited) and water ad libitum. Although the relative humidity should be at least 30% and preferably not exceed 70% other than during room cleaning the aim should be 50-60%. Lighting should be artificial, the cycle being 12 hours light, 12 hours dark. For feeding, conventional laboratory diets may be used with an unlimited supply of drinking water. Animals may be group-caged by dose, but the number of animals per cage must not interfere with clear observations of each animal. Results and Discussion: In the present study, administration of aqueous extract of A.sinuata in male wistar rats for 28 days period showed remarkable effect on ethylene glycol induced renal calculi by restoring the serum, urinary and histology of kidney which may be due to its diuretic activity that can help to flush the preformed stones and promote the excretion of nitrogenous wastes. Its antiurolithiatic activity may be attributed to the presence of saponins. Conclusion: The present finding emphasizes the aqueous extract of A.sinuata pods possess potential medicinal value and beneficial in the treatment of renal stone formation. Further studies on isolation of active constituents from aqueous extract of A.sinuata pods will be rewarding to develop better lead compounds to treat urolithiasis.
