A REVIEW ARTICLE – NOT MERELY A COMPILATION OF DATA

Abstract

Many a times, we have come across situations when we have to write an article that is to be submitted for publication in a journal. Although it should be a part of our daily life to report scientific content to cater our experiences and knowledge with the scientific community, but still being busy in our daily lives and fulfilling our daily needs, this one takes a backseat. And once an emergency arises or our deadlines are near, we do something; i.e. we write a review article. We compile latest studies (or even knowledge from two or three sources) and collect that data and bang on, the review is ready. But scientifically, that is not what a review article is.A review article is an actually an article that will summarize the present state of understanding on a specific topic. 1 It surveys and summarizes previously published studies, instead of reporting new facts or analysis. They teach us about the main people working in a field, recent major advances and discoveries, significant gaps in the research, current debates and ideas of where research might go next.More importantly, it analysis the methodologies of various studies and selects data from only those studies that have been correctly designed and performed. This provides us with the best possible knowledge on a particular subject in the best possible manner and also helps us to identify the potential errors that we might make in carrying out studies. One of the best known agencies in the world with respect to health care reviews is Cochrane. Cochrane is a British nonprofit, non-governmental organization formed to organize medical research findings to facilitate evidence-based choices about health interventions that are faced by health professionals, patients, and policy makers.2 It consists of 52 review groups that are based at research institutions worldwide, each focused on a specific topic of health research. These groups support Cochrane’s primary organizational function of preparing and maintaining systematic reviews. They are all independently run and financed. The group conducts systematic reviews of randomized controlled trials of health-care interventions and diagnostic tests and publishes them in The Cochrane Library. Going through a Cochrane review gives a real clear picture of how scientific articles on a specific subject are processed, studied and analysed to bring out the best of those and finally the conclusions that we derive are clinically based and more importantly evidence based findings that are very helpful in treatment of our patients as well as our knowledge.
