A REVIEW ON MICRONEEDLE PATCH- AN INNOVATIVE APPROACH

Journal Title: European Journal of Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences - Year 2018, Vol 5, Issue 5

Abstract

A microneedle patch developed to deliver the vaccine which could simplify the vaccination process and ensure that more people get vaccinated against this possibly fatal condition. The vaccine patch consists of 100 solid, water-soluble needles that are just long enough to penetrate the skin. The first patent on microneedles was filed in 1976 – the technology to make microneedles the trans follicular absorption of melanin. As a drug delivery tool, microneedle patches can deliver bioactive molecular of different physical size. Additionally, microneedle patches can be coated or encapsulate with DNA vaccine, subunit antigen, inactivated or live virus vaccine. A microneedle patch that delivers the vaccine could revolutionize the administration of the influenza vaccine, as well as of other vaccines. Compared to conventional intramuscular injection, microneedle vaccination resulted in more efficient lung virus clearance and enhanced cellular recall responses after challenge. These results suggest that dissolving microneedle patches can provide a new technology for simpler and safer vaccination with improved immunogenicity that could facilitate increased vaccination coverage. Because of their advantages in dose sparing, safety and treatment compliance, microneedle patches are expected to be widely applied in clinical treatment and vaccine administration in near future.
