Journal Title: International Research Journal of Applied and Basic Sciences - Year 2016, Vol 10, Issue 8

Abstract

This study aimed at recognition and examination of meta-cognitive strategies used by deaf EFL learners to facilitate their process of learning and comparing those strategies with the ordinary EFL learners. The sample of this study was 60 pre- intermediate language learners, 30 deaf and 30 hearing learners. The researcher’s observation showed that deaf learners who were really interested in learning a language, in spite of difficulties, made further effort and attention than the hearing learners did. However, the results of this study revealed that hearing learners in some respects were superior to deaf learners, of course with few exceptions. With the observation of participants’ behaviors and investigation of the outcomes resulted from comparison of two groups’ performance, the researcher concluded that hearing ability is one of the most important factors in learning a language like English.
