A study of pattern of breast diseases in patients presenting in surgery department at a tertiary care hospital

Abstract

Background: Breast lesions are one of the major causes of surgical problems in females and present with marked variation in their histological types Aims and Objectives: To study pattern of breast diseases in patients presenting in surgery department at a tertiary care hospital. Methodology: After approval from institutional ethical committee a cross-sectional study was done in the female patients with breast complains at the department of Surgery of a tertiary health care center during the one year period i.e. January 2016 to January 2017. All the patients with the written consent were included into the study except the immunocompromised patients. All details of the patients like age, complains was noted. All patients undergone FNAC of the breast for the primary diagnosis of breast conditions. Result: Most commonly affected age group by benign lesions in our was 20-29 years consistent with studies done by other authors. The most common presenting features were Lump in 95% followed by Pain in 72%, Axillary lump 43%, Large breast in 21%, Ulceration in 7% On FNAC the pattern of disease was Fibroadenoma-50.43%, Fibroepithelial polyp-11.97%, Lipoma-9.40%, Giantfibroadenoma-7.69%, Papiloma with stromal sclerosis-5.98%, Tubular adenoma-5.13%, Juvenile fibroadenoma-4.27%, Phyllode tumor (benign change) -2.56%, Infiltrating duct carcinoma-1.71%, Medullary carcinoma in 0.85%. Conclusion: It can be concluded from our study that the most common age was in the 2nd decade, most common presenting feature was lump and pain . On FNAC the most common diagnosis was Fibroadenoma, Fibroepithelial polyp, Lipoma, Giantfibroadenoma etc. and most common malignant tumor was Infiltrating duct carcinoma.
