A study of prevalence of anemia in pregnancy and associated factors at tertiary health care

Abstract

Background: Anemia is defined as a decreased blood cell hemoglobin concentration. It is one of the most common nutritional deficiency diseases observed globally and affects more than 1.62 billion (25%) people of the world’s population, of which 56 million are pregnant women Aims and Objectives: To Study Prevalence of Anemia in Pregnancy and Associated factors at tertiary health care. Methodology: This was a cross-sectional study carried out in the department of OBGY of the tertiary health care center during the year March 2016 to March 2017 in all the ANC woment attending ANC clinic. After written consent all the ANC women undergone ANC through check up and necessary investigations like CBC, Hb., Peripheral Smear, Stool examination etc. classification of Anemia was - severe when haemoglobin concentration is less than 7.0 g/dL, moderate when haemoglobin falls between 7.0 and 9.9 g/dL, and mild when haemoglobin concentration is from 10.0 to 11 g/dL. All the associated factors were asked. The data was presented in Tabular form and expressed in percentages. Results: The prevalence of anemia of Mild (10-11) was 52.27% followed by Moderate (7-9) in 29.55% and Severe (≤ 7) in 18.18% of Total anemic patients. The majority of the patients were having symptoms of Weakness or fatigue in 90% followed by Dizziness in 89%, Shortness of breath in 82%, Rapid or irregular heartbeat in 80%, Chest Pain in 79%, Pale skin, lips, and nails in 75%, Cold hands and feet in 72%. The most common etiology (Peripheral smear) was Iron deficiency in 93%, Megaloblastic in 4%, Dimorphic in 3%. The most common factors associated were Vegetarian Diet were 98%, Not consumption of IFA tablets -97%, Birth interval ≤ 2yrs -92%, Worm infestation -82%, H/o Malaria -78%, Drinking Tea, 65%, Less consumption of fruits -62%, Lower SES -32%. Conclusion : The majority of the patients were having symptoms of Weakness or fatiguein followed by, Shortness of breath etc. and the most common factors associated were Vegetarian Diet, Not consumption of IFA tablets, Birth interval ≤ 2yrs. Worm infestation, H/o Malaria, Drinking Tea, Less consumption of fruits, Lower SES etc.
