A STUDY ON COMMUNICATION INDUCED ACCIDENTS AND INCIDENTS IN AVIATION

Abstract
Communication is a factor that essential for human interactions. Surely there must be communication to be any interaction between people. Main objective of communication is being understandable. In this context, if the intelligibility could not be achieved, problems would occur between people. These problems effect both flow of human life and all areas where humans are. One of these areas is aviation. When causes of accidents and incidents are examined in aviation history, it is seen that the majority of the accidents and incidents are related with human factors. The main reason of human induced accidents and incidents is communication problem. Especially, communication problems between pilots and controllers are vital. Besides ambiguity, read back mistakes, confusing phraseology, similar call signs, poor English knowledge or heavy foreign accents, miscommunication or poor communication may lead crashes of aircraft and incidents. In this study, major aircraft crashes and incidents which are experienced in the past due to communication problems will be examined and solution proposals will be developed in order to prevent potential accidents.
