A study on prevalence of refractive error among medical students of aged 18 years and above in Melmaruvathur Adhiparasakthi institute of medical sciences and research, Melmaruvathur

Abstract
Background: Refractive error is a condition in which the optical system of the non-accommodating eyes is not able to bring parallel rays of light to focus on the retina. The prevalence of refractive errors among medical students was seen to high and they were unaware about it. But studies on refractive errors have focused mainly on school children’s in different parts of India. Objectives: To find out the prevalence of refractive error among second year undergraduate medical students in Melmaruvathur Adhiparasakthi Institute of Medical Sciences and Research. Materials and Methods: A descriptive, institution based, cross sectional study was conducted among second year undergraduate medical students of Melmaruvathur Adhiparasakthi Institute of Medical College and Research, from August 2014 to January 2015. The data was collected among 135 second year medical students in the Department of Community Medicine using pretested questionnaire. After that the study subjects were examined using Snellen’s chart for visual acuity. Results: The Overall prevalence of Refractive error was 54% (72). The Prevalence of Refractive error in the age of 18, 19 and 20 years age was 32 (24%), 35 (26%) and 5 (4%) respectively. The Prevalence of Refractive error among males and females were 28% (38) and 25% (34) respectively. Conclusion: Myopia is the major refractive error among the medical students and thus the correction of refractive error would benefit the society and nation at large. This highlights the need for increasing the awareness on refractive errors and dangers they may pose.
