عہد نبوی ﷺ میں خواتین کی تجارتی سرگرمیاں "سیرت طیبہ ﷺ کی روشنی میں" Trade Activities of Women in the Time of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)

Journal Title: INKĪSHĀF - Year 2021, Vol 1, Issue 1

Abstract

In the times of ignorance, Islamic doctrine provided the oppressed women a very high status. In those days the pagan Arabs did not consider the rights of the women beyond fulfillment of their physical needs. The Arabs looked down upon the women and the birth of a baby girl was considered most humiliating in their society. Quran mentions this fact in Surah Nahal verses 58 and 59 that how humiliating a person would feel when a girl was born in his family. Islam provides appropriate rights for a man and a woman commensurate with their physical and biological construction and psychology in the most balanced way. In Islam men and women have same rights; however their excellence on to one another is according to their roles. For example a husband being the bread winner has an upper hand on the wife while as a mother she has an edge over the father. This study is an analysis of women’s role in the development of trade in Prophetic era. Data is gathered from secondary sources; books, articles and online sources. Islam not only emphasizes upon the women to get education but also permits the women to quest for having skills and knowledge and take part in business activities on the condition that the women should follow the limits as laid down by the Sharjah. In the times of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) the women used to take part the trade activities most skillfully and professionally even his wives; Hazrat Khudeja R.A. used to do trade with Syria and Hazrat Zainab R.A. used to make handicrafts and sell locally. In addition many other pious women were also involved in different types of professions. Names of some such women are; Hazrat Umm e Sulaim, Hazrat Amna Binte Affan, Hazrat Sabra Binte Safwan, Hazrat Umm e Aaiman etc. Thus in the times of the Prophet (PBUH) the women of Islam had the courage and strength to work with the men shoulder to shoulder and earn their livelihood with chastity and in a dignified manner remaining within the limits of Islamic Injunctions.
