Abnormal liver function tests in a patient with myotonic dystrophy type 1
Journal Title: Annals of Hepatology - Year 2012, Vol 11, Issue 1
Abstract
Myotonic dystrophy type 1, also known as Steinert’s disease, is a multisystemic disorder with significant genetic and clinical heterogeneity. Apart from skeletal muscles’ myotonia and wasting, a variety of system organs can be affected. We report on a 49 years old female patient with unremarkable medical and familyhistory, who presented with elevated liver enzymes without signs or symptoms of chronic liver disease neither neurological features. Initial assessment, including liver biopsy, did not reveal the cause of these abnormalities. Eight months later, she complained for disequilibrium and eventually electromyography confirmed the diagnosis of Steinert’s disease. Steinert’s disease should be considered in the differential diagnosis of patients with elevated liver enzymes, as long as abnormal liver tests may be the initial presentation. The pathophysiological mechanism of this abnormality remains unclear.

Genetic susceptibility to hepatoxicity due to bosentan treatment in pulmonary hypertension
Background. Hepatotoxicity is a major side effect of treatment with bosentan in patients with pulmonary hypertension (PH). Bosentan is metabolized by the cytochrome CYP2C9 and inhibits the bile salt export pump, which is...
Dress syndrome and fulminant hepatic failure induced by lamotrigine
Lamotrigine is a non-aromatic antiepileptic drug. Drug rash with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS) syndrome is a severe idiosyncratic reaction to drugs, especially anti-epileptic drugs. Associated clinical featu...
Fatty liver and abdominal fat relationships with high C-reactive protein in adults without coronary heart disease
Background and rationale. Fatty liver (FL) and abdominal visceral fat (AVF) are strongly associated with systemic inflammation, however, it has not been defined if each one is independently involved, and if the insulin r...
Trans-arterial 90yttrium radioembolization for patients with unresectable tumors originating from the biliary tree
Patients with malignant tumors originating from the biliary tree have a poor prognosis, since only a minority of tumors can be resected and most palliative regimens have shown only limited success. We present two patient...
Efficacy of oral L-ornithine L-aspartate in cirrhotic patients with hyperammonemic hepatic encephalopathy
Hyperammonemia and associated cerebral edema cause neurological abnormalities in liver disease patients. Although only 15% of ammonia production originates in the colon, management strategies for hepatic encephalopathy (...
