ABRASIVE WEAR FOR SELECTED GRADES OF LOW-CARBON BORON STEELS AT DIFFERENT STATES OF HEAT TREATMENT

Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2012, Vol 244, Issue 4

Abstract

In recent years, steels with boron, which belonged to a group of abrasion resistant steels, have become increasingly popular. These steels are produced by using advanced technology of manufacturing and economically achieve very good mechanical properties. Applying these steels can extend the lifetime of expensive machining equipment in many industries, such as mining and the agriculture industry [L. 1, 2]. High values of mechanical strength and abrasion resistance are achieved after heat treatment (hardening and tempering). However, these steels are tailored to customer needs and supplied by the manufacturers. The article presents the results of abrasive wear resistance tests and analysis of the abrasive wear mechanism for two grades of steels, B27 and 28MCB5, for the delivery state and different stages of heat treatment. The steels are manufactured by two well-known European companies – Rautaruukki Corporation (Finland) and Zerneri Acciai Company (Italy). According to the manufacturers, these steels can be used for linings and wear parts for machines and equipment, edge plates, blades and chains, tools, screw conveyors, wear plates, fan blades, and especially in the agricultural machinery industry, both in parts subject to wear, as well as structural elements.
