Activated Sludge for Heavy Metal RemovalA Review

Abstract

The removal of heavy metals from the effluent is vastly studied topic among investigators. Activated sludge has been used for the heavy metal treatment efficiently by many researchers. It acts as good biosorbent for various metals. Present review presents the research carried out on various aspects of the sorption of heavy metals. The effects of various parameters like contact time, pH, initial concentration are reported. The effects of biological activities of sludge on metal uptake have been studied by the investigators. The use of activated sludge under optimized conditions is promising alternative for heavy metal removal.
