Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2013, Vol 66, Issue 3
Abstract
Introduction. Adenoma multiforme (pleomorphic adenoma – PA, tumor mixtus – TM) is a benign tumour occurring in the vicinity of the salivary glands. It is derived from two cell types: mioepithelial and epithelial present in intrasalivary ducts. This tumour occurs most frequently in the region of submandibular and parotid glands, but there are sporadic cases of its presence in the vicinity of small salivary glands of the palate, lips and cheeks. Aim of the study. To describe the case of a patient treated for adenoma multiforme in the area of the hard palate and present selected references. Materials and methods. The paper presents the case of a patient with a large mixed tumour in the area of hard palate. The results of laboratory tests and the course of surgery, as well as a review of current literature was also discussed. Results and conclusions. The treatment of choice is resection of the tumour with a margin of healthy tissues. Detection of lesion and treatment initiation in the early stages of its development are essential to avoid adverse consequences of function and aesthetics. However, slow and painless growth of tumor mixtus delays seeking medical advice by patients. That is why regular check-ups are recommended.
