Adiponectin, Leptin and Resistin in women with policystic ovary syndrome
Journal Title: Postępy Nauk Medycznych - Year 2011, Vol 24, Issue 4
Abstract
Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) belongs to the most frequent endocrine disorders found in women of reproductive age. It is characterized by several abnormalities in different grade of frequency and intensity, amongst them: abnormal ovulations (oligo- or anovulation), infertility, hyperadrogenism, obesity and insulin resistance. In addition, ultrasound examination may reveal ovaries enlargement with enhanced number of preantral follicles. In PCOS prevalence to abdominal obesity is also found. Adipocytes are able to produce and secrete biologically active substances, e.g. leptin, resistin and adiponectin, that may influence lipid and carbohydrate metabolism and potentially may modulate clinical course of PCOS.Aim: Evaluation of leptin, resistin and adiponectin concentration in lean and overweight/obese women with PCOS.Material and methods: 148 women attended the study: 81 subjects with PCOS (47 lean and 34 overweight/obese) and 67 controls. In all individuals we assessed adiponectin, resistin and leptin concentration as well as lipid profile and carbohydrate metabolism (fasting glucose and insulin levels, HOMA-IR). In addition, anthropometric parameters (waist and hip circumferences, BMI and BIA) were also estimated. Statistical analyses were performed. Results: In overweight/obese subjects with PCOS the lowest values of adiponectin and the highest concentrations of leptin were found. Resistin levels did not differ between studied groups. As predicted the most disturbed lipid and carbohydrate profiles were seen in individuals with PCOS being overweight/obese.Conclusions: Variability of adiponectin and leptin levels seen in women with PCOS was the most intensive in individuals with BMI above the normal range. However, additional studies are needed, including adipokine gene polymorphisms, to obtain complex assessment of PCOS.
