Journal Title: Przegląd Wschodni - Year 2016, Vol 14, Issue 54
Abstract
The article describes reconstructs the activities and achievements, of envoys and senators from Kiev, Bracław and Wołyń Voivodeships, in the second half of the sixteenth century, at successive general sejms during the reign of King Stefan Batory. The gathered material especially concerns the representatives from Wołyń Voivodeship. Unfortunately, much less source material references survived, concerning the remaining two voivodeships. The gathered facts and materials testify that during the reign of Stefan Batory, the Wołyń nobility sided with the middle nobility opposition and openly challenged their senators at the local level. Simultaneously, they realized their own program for greater autonomy to strengthen the independence of Kiev, Bracław and Wołyń Voivodeships, constituted in the Union of Lublin (1569). These activities were connected to aspirations for emancipation with respect to the lords (kniaź) and senators. A lack of sufficient information does not allow these theories to be unequivocally applied to the Kiev and Bracław nobility, but limited references may indicate that similar processes also took place in these voivodeships. In effect, during the reign of King Stefan Batory, the Ruthenian nobility from the Eastern voivodeships took advantage of their presence on the central political stage of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in order to strengthen their own position in the region.
