Journal Title: Al Bahis research journal of Islamic sciences - Year 2021, Vol 2, Issue 2
Abstract
“Hijab” is Arabic word which means “to conceal” or “to hide”. Allah has ordered women to cover themselves using two words (Khimar and Jilbab) in the Quran. He says: “And tell the believing women that they must lower their gaze and guard their private parts, and must not expose their adornments, except that which appears thereof, and must wrap their bosoms with their shawls”. (24:31) All scholars have unanimous views about the meanings of “Khimar” that it refers to that piece of cloth which is used by women to hide their heads and chest. While opinions of these scholars are contradictory to each other about the meanings of “Jilbab”. Because of this contradictory, the problem about the Hijab has different opinions and its own arguments by the critics through which they strengthen their ideology. Some scholars are strongly convinced of putting veil over the face. Famous scholars among them are Abdullah bin Hamood Altowhjri, Maulana Mawdudi, Sheikh Mohammad Salih Al-Usmaeen, etc.According to these scholars, the word “Jalabib” is the plural of “Jilbab”, which means to hang away, and the verse mentioned Jilbab is translated thus: “hang one part of your sheets above yourselves, which is to put a veil over their faces. While the second group of scholars considers that it is "Mustahab" (recommended) for women to wear veil over the faces. Some scholars who support this view are Sheikh Albani, Imam Yousef Alqardawi, Dr. Zakir Naik and Shia imam Rohullah Mosawi Alkhumani, etc. According to these groups of scholars, jilbab is the sheet, which women wear over their clothes, and they usually use it while leaving the house. The contradictory explanation of the term "Jilbab" mentioned by both the distinguished scholars has raised the issue that, to hide the face and hands of the Muslim woman is "Fardh" (obligatory), "Mustahab" (recommended) or just a tradition? There is also a third group, which has taken the moderate path; they say that the orders about Hijab are ambiguous, and in view of this situation, individual power will have to interfere with the decision.
