ALGOFLORA FROM THE MILETIN AND JIJIA INFERIOR CATCHMENTS I. PHYLUM BACILLARIOPHYTA AND PHYLUM CYANOBACTERIA
Journal Title: Analele Stiintifice ale Universitatii Alexandru Ioan Cuza din Iasi, Serie noua, Sectiunea II a. Biologie vegetala - Year 2013, Vol 59, Issue 2
Abstract
The paper presents a detailed analysis of the algal flora from the Miletin and Jijia Rivers inferior catchments located in the proximity of Iaşi city. The study area is represented also by a series of reservoirs complexes (Hălceni, Vlădeni and Larga Jijia) mainly used for intensive aquaculture that were formed on these rivers, in the beginning with the scope of flood risk decrease, in the 1980s. The current utilization of the reservoirs is as fisheries where it is practiced the artificial fertilization (especially Vlădeni and Larga Jijia) with organic and inorganic matter (manure, ammonium nitrate and super-phosphate) in order to boost the primary link in the food chain – the algae. The paper focuses on two of the main phylums of algae that were identified in the study area, represented by the diatoms (Bacillariophyta) and the blue-green algae (Cyanobacteria). The high trophic levels of the waters (hypereutrophic) are reflected in the wide variety of species and in their densities that lead not only to algal blooms but also to the formation of thick layers of scum especially in the group of the blue-green algae that are known for this specific reaction to the extreme surrounding environmental factors (nutrients content being the most important).
