Journal Title: International Journal of Management Sciences - Year 2014, Vol 3, Issue 4

Abstract

Distribution is an important component of production system of a company. This study attempts the distribution constraints of Dangote Cement Company, Kogi state, Nigeria. Data were obtained from both primary and secondary sources. Information was gathered from drivers of the company using systematic sampling technique. The respondents were sampled based on every tenth person sampled on the field. In all, 253 respondents were successfully interviewed. The mean rank order analysis of the results shows that incessant stoppages at road check points was ranked first amongst the problems listed by the drivers (mean = 2.14) making it the most critical while the issue of pilferage was ranked ninth (mean = 8.01) making it the least critical of the problems. Spearman’s rank correlation was used to determine the relationship between the constraints considered. The result shows that there is a correlation between armed robbery attack and accidents at spearman’s rank (rs = 0.523) at significance level p < 0.01 shows that the higher the rate of armed robbery attacks, the increase in the number of accidents. Similarly, the correlation between bad roads and armed robbery attacks at spearman’s rank (rs = 0.585) with p < 0.01 reveals that there is a correlation, meaning that bad roads is a causative effect of armed robbery attacks. The correlation between traffic congestion in urban centers and incessant stoppages at road check points reveals that there is correlation between them indicating that traffic congestion increases as incessant stoppages increases at spearman’s rank (rs = 0.528) at significant level of p < 0.01. The study therefore recommends that efforts should also be made to reduce delays for cement while on transit.
