Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2018, Vol 11, Issue 55
Abstract
Translation always has been importance for humanity and it is not easy as it is thought. When a translator is transferring a text into another language, s/he comes across with some problems. The main task of the translator is to translate the source text into the target language in a consistent way. In this study, a short story called "The Last Leaf", one of O. Henry's precious works and its translations by Mehmet Harmancı and Hale Akman have been studied comparatively. This study is a descriptive qualitative research. The aim of the study is to analyse the translation strategies, which were used by the translators, and the strategies used for cultural elements, and the problems of coherency, cohesion and consistency in the translations. The result of the study has shown that the translators have used different translation strategies and although there are some problems of coherency and cohesion in translations, there are no problems of consistency between the source text and target texts.
