AN INTERPRETATION OF THE DISTINCTION BETWEEN LOGOS AND MYTH OVER PLATO MYTHS
Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2018, Vol 11, Issue 55
Abstract
Modern point of view interprets the formation of Greek Philosophy as a transition of ‘irrational myth’ into a ‘rational logos’. One of the main reasons why philosophy is called as Greek miracle is that the transition is claimed to be extremely powerful. However; myth, as the Greek world suggests, is a way to interpret the world and it constitutes their base of thinking. The myths used in Plato dialogs are considered as a proof of this condition. Socrates and other speakers who speak in dialogs express varied myths whenever question-answer dialectics are interrupted or stuck for different reasons. The myths being told have such different functions as contextualization, documentation, making an anology, removing lingual distinction and enhancing the meaning. In this respect, myth is a motivating and potentially persuasive strenght. Based on the functions of the myths used in Plato dialogs, the study aims to make an interpretation over the distinction of myth and lagos related to the origins of philosophy.
