Analysis of a possible use of Corah’s questionnaire to assess the emotional state of dental patients
Journal Title: Prosthodontics - Year 2015, Vol 65, Issue 2
Abstract
Introduction. Patients presenting to the dental surgery often feel anxious. In some people emotions are so strong and difficult to control that they easily give up doctor visits. This enxiety is known as dental phobia, odontophobia or oralophobia. The problem is often encountered in the distinction between dentophobia and patients’ behaviour caused by other factors, e.g., severe pain. A myriad of tests and surveys are used to solve the problem but their use during the first visit is difficult and uncomfortable, and the analysis of the results takes much time.Aim of the study. To investigate the possibility of using Corah’s questionnaire to assess the emotional state of the patient before surgery.Material and methods. The presented study analyzed the use of Corah’s questionnaire as a quick test to determine the emotional state of the patient before surgery. For this purpose, a survey was carried out in a group of 100 randomly selected men and women.Results. The results showed that Corah’s questionnaire and the determination of the Dental Anxiety Scale (DAS) coefficient allow for effective assessment of the patients’ emotional state before dental treatment, which can have a direct impact on the choice of treatment.Conclusions. 1) Corah’s questionnaire can be used to quickly define the emotional state of a patient before surgery. 2) It is recommended that Corah’s questionnaire along with a personal questionnaire be completed by each patient during the first dental visit.
