Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2012, Vol 28, Issue 1

Abstract

The aim of this study was to analyze consumption of products constituting sources of dietary fiber and fat and anthropometric parameters of football and handball players, in terms of opportunities that help achieve success in sports and impact on maintaining health. The study was carried on athletes aged 23.7 ± 3.5 years during training period. The group consisted of 30 male athletes, including 15 training football and 15 handball. The nutritional status of subjects was evaluated using anthropometric measurements (height, weight) and analysis of body composition using FUTREX device. BMI, percentage of body fat (% FM) and fat-free mass (FFM) were determined. The assessment of consumption of fat and dietary fiber was based on Block questionnaires. Mean values of BMI, FM % and FFM for football players were significantly higher than of handball players. On the basis of BMI values, 67% of the football players had excessive body mass. Due to correct percentage of FM for all the players, the excessive body mass was due to high content of fat-free mass. According to the nutritional habits evaluation, it was found out that diet poor in fiber characterized 93% of the subjects, and there was an excessive fat intake among 93% also. There was a significantly higher intake of dietary fiber in the handball group. The difference resulted from significantly more frequent consumption of fruits, high-fiber cereals and vegetables by handball players. There were no significant differences in the amount of fat consumed by the two groups. There is a need for continuous monitoring and evaluating of the nutritional habits of athletes of different disciplines, to identify and prevent dietary errors, so as to attain success in sports and management of remote health effects.
