ANALYSIS OF THE INFLUENCE OF SUBLAYER THICKNESS ON THE DEFORMATION MECHANISM AND FRACTURE OF Ti/TiN MULTILAYER

Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2010, Vol 232, Issue 4

Abstract

Ceramic/metal multilayers with a nanometer thickness of layers are new kinds of materials for tribological applications. A stack of hard ceramic and tough metallic layers give coatings with higher hardness, adhesion and wear resistance. In this article, micromechanical properties of Ti/TiN multilayers with different thickness ratios of ceramic to metallic sublayers are presented. Multilayers were deposited on 2H17 ferrite steel by the PLD (Pulsed Laser Deposition) technique. The deformation mechanism based on subsequent fracture of TiN sublayers and followed plastic deformation of Ti around crack were found using TEM examination of thin foils from spherical indents. Tribological tests show the highest wear resistance of 8xTi/TiN multilayer with 1:2 thickness ratio of Ti:TiN (42:83 nm). Slightly lower wear resistance of 8xTi/TiN 1:4 (25:100 nm) is a result of possible crack propagation through the metallic sublayer and the loss of its ability to deflect and terminate cracks. The thinner metallic sublayers, the easier is crack propagation through the coating, but excessively thick Ti sublayers lead to lower hardness and wear resistance. Optimum properties for tested Ti/TiN system could be expected when the metallic sublayer is not thinner than 40nm and metallic to ceramic thickness ratio is 1:2.
