Journal Title: Journal of Air Force Medical University - Year 2023, Vol 44, Issue 4
Abstract
Objective To analyze the reasons and clinical characteristics of discontinued wearing of corneal bandage lenses in clinical use. Methods A retrospective analysis was performed on the medical records of 200 patients (223 eyes) who were treated with corneal bandage lenses for different reasons from June 2020 to June 2021 in Department of Ophthalmology, Xijing Hospital, Air Force Medical University. The reasons and incidence of discontinued wearing of corneal bandage lenses and its relationship with diseases were analyzed. Results Patients who needed to wear corneal bandage lenses for an adjuvant treatment included patients underwent post-pterygium surgery and patients with non-infectious ocular surface injuries, including 23 cases in both eyes and 177 cases in single eye, with an average age of (53. 87 ± 12. 51) years. In 223 eyes, 22 eyes ( 9. 87% ) failed to wear corneal bandage lenses continuously as planned, including 6 eyes after pterygium operation and 16 eyes with non-infectious ocular surface injuries. The reasons why the corneal bandage lenses could not be worn continuously as planned included neurotrophic keratopathy and contact lens dropout caused by early chemical eye injury (14 eyes, 6. 28% ), increased ocular discomfort requiring lens removal in drug-induced ocular surface injuries with extensive corneal epithelial erosion (5 eyes, 2. 24% ), secondary corneal infection occurrence after lens wearing (3 eyes, 1. 35% ). Conclusion In clinical application, there are different conditions that the corneal bandage lenses cannot be worn continuously as planned, so it needs follow-up observation after use.
