Anthropology of Food in Travel

Abstract

Purpose. Food is an important element of each tourist’s lifestyle and it frequently becomes a key issue in building their identity, therefore, it should become a subject essential for anthropologists. As the initial investigation into library sources has shown, Poland has a substantial niche in this area and it is hard to find any comprehensive research papers on what and why tourists eat or do not eat – both in travel and at home, how they react to certain dishes, what kind of culinary experiences they collect, what is the place and role of cuisine and culinary culture in their itineraries. The aim of this paper is to analyze chosen Polish articles and publications on the anthropology of food from the last several years. The analysis will show how much attention was devoted to food in travel, it will research the status quo of the matter and indicate the necessity to develop a subfield of anthropology called anthropology of food in travel.
