The personal proper names as elements of the text are one of the important means of the character creating. Shmelyov are of special interest at this point. I. S. Shmelyov’s works are investigated comprehensively, however there isn’t any research work dedicated to the personal proper names. The aim of our investigation is to show that the onomastics field of the novel is an important element of the poetics because the names of the characters are used by I. S. Shmelyov for the reconstruction of the conception of a person and the world, for implicit expression of the personal attitude to the characters, carrying different national-psychological qualities. After analyzing the variety of the anthroponyms in the novel „The heavenly ways” (90 anthroponymic units are represented in the text), it is possible to conclude, that they serve as the additional means to express the writer’s views, reflected in the text. Each name used in the novel acts as denotation and reflects all possible meanings. The anthroponyms brightly express their semantic meaning and have a hidden associative background.
