Antibacterial activity of a new Streptomyces sp. SU isolated from Rhizosphere soil

Journal Title: Journal of Pharmacy Research - Year 2011, Vol 4, Issue 5

Abstract

A total of forty Actinomycetes had been isolated from the garden rhizosphere soil. All the isolates were tested against six human pathogenic bacteria viz. Eschrichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pnuemoniae, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Proteus vulgaris and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Among them, Four (10%) isolates were active against all the bacteria, two (5 %) isolates were active against five bacteria, two (5%) isolates showed activity against only two bacteria. Only one active strain SS5 was studied of their morphological, cultural, biochemical, physiological, and 16s rRNA gene sequence and identified as Streptomyces sp. SU. Bioactive compound produced by the strain was extracted using Ethyl acetate and showed high activity against all the human pathogenic bacteria.
