Antifungal Activity and Phytochemical Analysis of Aqueous Extracts of Ricinus communis and Punica granatum
Journal Title: Journal of Pharmacy Research - Year 2011, Vol 4, Issue 1
Abstract
In the present investigation, the aqueous leaf and pericarp extracts of castor oil plant (Ricinus communis) and pomegranate (Punica granatum) were evaluated for antifungal activity against Candida species and subsequently phytochemical analysis of the crude extracts was carried out to determine the active phytochemical constituents responsible for antifungal activity. It was observed that aqueous leaf extract of R. communis was effective in inhibiting Candida albicans, C. glabrata and C. tropicalis with zone of inhibition ranging between 17mm and 32 mm followed by aqueous pericarp extract of Punica granatum which inhibited two species of Candida namely C. glabrata and C. albicans with zone of growth inhibition between 24mm and 37mm. All the Candida species, except C. tropicalis were resistant to the positive control, ketoconazole. Phytochemical screening of crude leaf and pericarp aqueous extracts of both the plants revealed the presence of tannins, steroids and flavonoids. The results indicate that the aqeueous leaf and pericarp extracts of Ricinus communis and Punica granatum might be exploited as natural drug for the treatment of several infectious diseases caused by these organisms
