Antioxidants and Serum Uric Acid levels in Post-Stroke Cases

Journal Title: International Journal of Medical and Health Sciences - Year 2014, Vol 3, Issue 4

Abstract

Background: Measurement of antioxidants and serum uric acid in post-stroke cases is very important because they may play a role in the prevention of stroke and its deleterious effects as they scavenge free radicals and could be used as a guiding tool for more effective therapy. Materials and Methods: We studied 80 acute ischaemic stroke patients and 80 community-based healthy controls. Venous blood was obtained within 24 hrs, at 7 days and at 30 days after stroke onset and at baseline for community controls. Malondialdehyde, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidise, glutathione reductase and serum uric acid were measured. Results: There was a significant association of low superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxide, glutathione reductase and elevated levels of malondialdehyde and serum uric acid with stroke. Conclusion: Comprehensive analysis of different types of antioxidants will improve the understanding of individual pathophysiologies and further promote the development of screening tool of high risk stroke patients, predicting model of stroke outcome.
