ANXIETY LEVELS AND ACHIEVEMENTS OF BADMINTON PLAYERS IN LIGHT OF MARTENS MULTIDIMENTIONAL ANXIETY THEORY

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2007, Vol 23, Issue 3

Abstract

Background. Anxiety is one of the factors, which considerably modify the level of performance. In order to describe the relationship between anxiety and sport achievements more precisely, subclassification of anxiety (trait and state anxiety, cognitive and somatic anxiety) is taken into consideration. Martens' Multidimensional Anxiety Theory is an example of theories, where anxiety is considered as a multidimensional factor. On the basis of this hypothesis, self-report scales to measure anxiety in sport were constructed. The scales were used in research which involved badminton players. The purpose of this study was to examine differences in intensity of competitive anxiety symptoms in three groups of male and female badminton players of different achievement levels.Material and methods. The research was carried out during the Polish Badminton Championships U-19 and U-21. The sample consisted of 83 badminton players (47 males and 36 females) who were divided into three groups of different achievement levels: advanced (n=22), intermediate (n=33) and novice (n=28). They were asked to complete The Revised Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2R (CSAI-2R) and Sport Competitive Anxiety Test (SCAT). Both of them were translated into Polish.Results. The analysis of results obtained with use of Polish version of the tests confirmed the relationships among different aspects of anxiety. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed significant differences in the intensity of somatic anxiety and self-confidence in the group of men of different achievement levels. There were no significant differences between examined variables in the female group. Women had higher level of cognitive and somatic anxiety than men and lower level of self-confidence, however, these differences were not significant.Conclusions. In order to better understand the relationship between anxiety and sport achievements, not only the intensity of anxiety but also its direction” (the interpretation of anxiety as facilitative or debilitative) should be considered. It would be also interesting to investigate the relationship between anxiety and other variables e.g. volitional control.
