Applications of digital core analysis and hydraulic flow units in petrophysical characterization
Journal Title: Advances in Geo-Energy Research - Year 2017, Vol 1, Issue 1
Abstract
Conventional petrophysical characterizations are often based on direct laboratory measurements. Although they provide accurate results, such measurements are time-consuming and limited by instrument and environment. What’s more, in the geo-resource energy industry, availability and cuttings of core plugs are time consuming and difficult. Because of these reasons, virtual digital core technology is of increasing interest due to its capability of characterizing rock samples without physical cores and experiments. Virtual digital core technology, also known as digital rock physics, is used to discover, understand and model relationships between material, fluid composition, rock microstructure and macro equivalent physical properties. Based on actual geological conditions, modern mathematical methods and imaging technology, the digital model of the core or porous media is created to carry out physical field numerical simulation. In this review, the methods for constructing digital porous media are introduced first, then the characterization of thin rock cross section and the capillary pressure curve using scanning electron microscope image under mixed wetting are presented. Finally, we summarize the hydraulic flow unit methods in petrophysical classification.

A new algorithm for computation of horizontal-well pressure in Laplace domain
The effect of wellbore pressure drop on horizontal well pressure response is relatively important when flow velocity is high or the surface of horizontal wellbore is rough. The objective of this study is to develop a sta...
Mechanisms of reservoir pore/throat characteristics evolution during long-term waterflooding
Formation pore structure and reservoir parameters change continually during waterflooding due to sand production, clay erosion, and pressure/temperature variation, which causes great challenge in geological modeling and...
A new method for clastic reservoir prediction based on numerical simulation of diagenesis: A case study of Ed1 sandstones in Bozhong depression, Bohai Bay Basin, China
The use of seismic exploration technique to provide reliable reservoir information is a conventional method. However, due to its quality and resolution reasons, it cannot satisfy the detailed research and characterizatio...
Review of exploration and production technology of natural gas hydrate
Natural gas hydrate is an ice-like substance which is sometimes called “combustible ice” since it can literally be lighted on fire and burned as fuel. Natural gas hydrate is characterized by widespread distribution, larg...
An equivalent single-phase flow for oil-water two-phase flow and its potential application in well test
In this work an equivalent single-phase flow model is proposed based on the oil-water two-phase flow equation with saturation-dependent parameters such as equivalent viscosity and equivalent formation volume factor. The...
