Abstract

Rings, one of the most common accessories throughout human history, have been used as objects representing various emotions. The oldest known usage of rings, featuring several different properties based on the method of extraction and processing of its raw materials, was in the 3rd millennia BC. Meanwhile, oldest rings found in Anatolia dates back to the era of the Hittites (1600-1200 BC). There are 125 rings classified as belonging to the 1st millennia, Medieval Age, Roman and Byzantine eras at Kırşehir Museum. Majority of the items were made of bronze alloy, while 2 have been produced using silver (Byzantium), 2 of copper (medieval times) and 1 of glass (Roman). The artifacts classified as metal girdled, stone girdled and non-girdled, and the girdled ones feature geometric, plant and animal motifs. Carnelian, cairngorm, amethyst and green krisopras, which are quartz ornamental stones processed in oval and spherical forms, have been used in stoned pieces.
