Journal Title: Вісник Одеського національного університету. Бібліотекознавство, бібліографознавство, книгознавство - Year 2018, Vol 23, Issue 1
Abstract
The article presents biographical information on Antoni Muczkowski (Muciek) (1807-1852), a famous Polish philologist, publisher, archivist and bibliophile. The features of his book collection are exposed. A. Muczkowski got primary education in Krakow and Poznan. First he was a student of the Law Faculty of Wroclaw University, later he studied law and philology in Berlin. Having moved moved to Warsaw, A. Muczkowski worked as a private teacher, and then as teacher at the gymnasium. Soon after, A. Muczkowski started working in the Main Archive of the ancient royal metrics as an associate. A few years later he was recommended by V.-A. A. Maciejowski to get the position of the lecturer of Greek and Latin literature at the Department of Antique Literature at the Roman Catholic Theological Academy in Warsaw. Despite his serious illness and financial problems, A. Muczkowski managed to collect a good deal of materials on the history of Poland and to do research work. In his last years, he had been working on the “Polish Diplomatic Code” (“Kodeks dyplomatyczny polski”; Warsaw, 1847-1859). Antoni Muczkowski was a passionate bibliophile known to all Warsaw antiquaries. He spent practically his entire income on book acquisitions. His library (about 12,000 titles of books and brochures) was considered to be the best in Warsaw of those days. After A. Muczkowski deceased his library and other property of the bibliophile were sold at a public auction held in late June 1852. Books and manuscripts coming from A. Muczkowski library were dispersed their further destiny being unknown. More than a dozen copies of the copies from Antoni Muczkowski collection were found in the stacks of the Scientific Library of the Odessa I. I. Mechnikov National University as a part of two important collections: those of Polish bibliphiles Andrzej Kuharski and Romuald Hube. Which replenished the departments of philological, ethnographic, legal and historical literature in the LIbrary. The study of the formation of Antoni Muczkowski collection and of the provenance of copies of books as well as their features can be regarded to be quite perspective in the context of the history of book migration in Europe.
