Articulaton disorders and physiological functions of stomatognathic system among students of primary school

Abstract
Dysfunctions of the stomatognathic system, such as inappropriate breathing, swallowingor chewing function, may lead to speech defects due to lowered muscle tensionor motor efficiency, especially of the tongue or lips.This paper presents the findings of the logopedic research conducted on 115 studentssixth graders, constituting the entire population in the examined age groups. The resultsindicate a high number of articulatory disorders − 83%. Functional abnormalities werefound in a smaller number of the examined students, respectively: breathing disfunction– 18 per cent, swallowing disfunction – 30 per cent, inappropriate placing of tongue atrest – 33 per cent, lowered tongue and lips efficiency – 27 per cent. A comparison of thequantitative data revealed that in the groups of young people with inappropriate physiologicalfunctions there are more speech defects. The statistical analysis confirmed twoessential correlations: the way of swallowing and the position of the tongue at rest havethe influence on the quality of articulation. Articulatory disorders were confirmed in allthe children with parafunctions in the stomatognathic system.The findings are alarming because of the epidemiology of the observed phenomenain children.
