Assessment of awareness towards generic and branded drugs among resident doctors and clinicians of a tertiary care hospital

Abstract
Background: Doctors frequently face the problem of decision making regarding choice of prescribing branded or generic drugs. This cross-sectional questionnaire based study was designed to assess the awareness among clinicians and residents about various aspects of branded and generic drugs to ascertain their rational use in patient care thereby reducing the economic burden on the patient and society. Methods: The present study was a cross-sectional questionnaire based study including consenting clinicians and residents of a tertiary care hospital. A questionnaire containing questions regarding awareness about generic and branded medicines, was distributed and the data from filled questionnaire was collected and analysed. Results: About 81% of resident doctors were aware of generic drugs. 61% of doctors felt that generic drugs are equally efficacious as branded drugs.Most of doctors (69%) felt that generic drugs were equally safe as branded drugs. Conclusion:Most of the doctors had knowledge about generic medicine and were aware of their efficacy,safety and cost. Most of them were in favour of prescribing generic drugs.
