Assessment of the buffer capacity of saliva and oral flora in patients with oligodontia of permanent teeth - a preliminary report

Journal Title: Forum Ortodontyczne - Year 2012, Vol 8, Issue 4

Abstract

Oligodontia is defined as the congenital absence of six or more deciduous teeth, permanent teeth, or both, excluding third molars. 57% of patients with oligodontia display hair, nail and/or sweat gland problems, and decreased saliva secretion. Aim: The aim of the study was to investigate the buffering capacity of the saliva, the composition and the count of bacteria colonies and the fungal contamination present in the oral cavity of patients with oligodontia and to evaluate the dental status using the DMFT index. Material: Fifteen patients (9 boys, 6 girls) with oligodontia of permanent teeth (study group) and fourteen patients (10 boys, 4 girls) without congenital absence of permanent teeth (control group), totally 29 patients aged between 7 and 16 years. Methods: The dental examination, the analysis of panoramic radiographs, the CRT Buffer test and the CRT Bacteria test were used. The results were analysed statistically using the Fisher's four-fold contingency table test. Results: The highest registered DMFT score was 6 in the study group and 16 in the control group. The majority of the patients (10 in each of the two groups) had the average salivary buffer capacity. Significant changes in incidence of Lactobacillus acidophilus and Candida albicans have been noticed in certain groups of patients. Conclusions: Patients with oligodontia had lower DMFT scores, than patients with the normal number of teeth present. The high incidence of Candida albicans colonies in patients with oligodontia indicates the need of implementing appropriate treatment therapy. (Orthod. Forum 2012; 8: 163 - 72).
