Association between alcohol dependence and overweight/obesity in high school students
Journal Title: Shanghai Journal of Preventive Medicine - Year 2023, Vol 35, Issue 10
Abstract
ObjectiveTo analyze the association between alcohol dependence and overweight and obesity among high school students.MethodsThis study adopted stratified cluster sampling method. Four high schools ï¼one vocational high school includedï¼ were selected as the research sites. We used self-designed questionnaires to investigate the drinking behavior of high school students. This study used propensity score matching method to control confounding factors ï¼e.g genderï¼ school typeï¼ etc.ï¼. Then we compared the differences in drinking behavior between obese/overweight group and normal weight group after matchingï¼ and used a multivariate logistic regression model to analyze the relationship between drinking behavior and overweight and obesity.ResultsA total of 811 high school students participated in the survey. 60 people were excluded due to mild and moderate weight lossï¼ and 751 people were normal or obese/overweight. After 1ï¼1 propensity score matchingï¼ there were 217 people each in obese/overweight group and normal group. The characteristics of genderï¼ school typeï¼ grade and family economic level of the two groups were balanced after matching. The difference was statistically significant ï¼P<0.05ï¼ between obese/overweight and normal group in the followingï¼ drinking of alcohol at high schoolï¼ alcohol dependenceï¼ the maximum drinks at one timeï¼ drinking of alcohol at family gatheringsï¼ whether bought alcohol for othersï¼ whether their family members recommended drinkingï¼ whether they have tried to quit drinking in the past yearï¼ and the time of blush after drinking. The multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that the degree of alcohol dependence ï¼the alcohol use disorder score ⥠8ï¼ was a risk factor for overweight and obesity ï¼OR=3.600ï¼ 95%CIï¼ 1.244â10.424ï¼. Besidesï¼ having bought alcohol for others and family members advising alcohol consumption were suggested to be protective factors for overweight and obesity ï¼OR=0.525ï¼ 95%CIï¼ 0.309â0.890 and OR=0.377ï¼ 95%CIï¼ 0.222â0.641ï¼.ConclusionHigh school students who have alcohol dependence suffer a higher risk of obesity/overweightï¼ while high school students who may have drinking behaviors but do not have alcohol dependence have a lower risk of obesity/overweight. It is critical to guide young people on drinking in terms of health.
