Atracción de Omorgus (Omorgus) suberosus (Fabricius, 1775) (Coleoptera: Trogidae) a excretas de mamíferos carnívoros
Journal Title: REVISTA CHILENA DE ENTOMOLOGÍA - Year 2022, Vol 48, Issue 2
Abstract
Omorgus (Omorgus) suberosus (Fabricius, 1775) is a species of Trogidae whose feeding habits allow them to associate with any source of keratin, including the feces of various omnivorous species; however, it has not been reported in the feces of carnivorous mammals. The objective of this work is to report, for the first time, the attraction of O. suberosus to excreta of two species of carnivorous mammals in captive conditions in remnants of sub-evergreen forest in the central region of Chiapas, Mexico. Systematic monthly sampling was carried out for one year, using pitfall traps baited with feces of six species of mammals (herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores) native to the region, to verify their effectiveness in attracting beetles. Eighteen individuals of O. suberosus were captured during four months of the sampling cycle. Despite using a wide variety of excreta for beetle sampling, individuals were only attracted to feces of the two carnivorous mammal species: Canis latrans Say, 1823 and Panthera onca (Linnaeus, 1758). Their tolerance towards anthropized environments is reaffirmed and the capture of the specimens suggests a marked seasonal presence.
