AUGMENTATİON OF TRANSPEDICULAR SCREWS WITH SUBLAMINAR WIRING BIOMECHANICAL ANALYSIS OF PULL-OUT STRENGTHS İN A BOVINE MODEL
Journal Title: Journal of Turkish Spinal Surgery - Year 1991, Vol 2, Issue 4
Abstract
Pedicular screvvs, despite being known as the strongest method of vertebral fixation have a substantial risk of pulling out during surgical manipulations, and at the follow-up examinations, especially in the osteoporotic pa-tients. This study is performed to see whether the pull-out strengths of transpedicular screvvs could be increased with the addition of sublaminar vviring at the very same spinal segment. The right side pedicles of eight fresh bovine vertebrae were drilled, tapped, and Isola pedicular screvvs were placed. These screvvs were then attached to short segments of rods vvith connectors. The same procedures were performed for the left pedicles and every connector rod complex ıvere augmented vvith double sublaminar vvires. The pull-out strengths were measured using Lloyd Universal Testing Machine and load-displacement curves for each screvv ıvere obtained. Although sublaminar vviring had some beneficial effects on the pull-out strengths of the screvvs, no statistically signifı'cant (p = 0.17) improvement vvas shovvn vvith sublaminar vviring augmentation of pedicular screvv fixation.

LUMBAR INTRADURAL DISC HERNIATION WITH CAUDA EQUINA SYNDROME
Intradural disc herniation (IDH) are very rare entities with an incidence of 0.2–2.2% among all cases of herniated discs. The incidence of cauda equine syndrome in IDH is higher than in extradural herniation. Preoperativ...
